Rob Reiner, wife Michele Singer’s son was ‘responsible’ for their deaths

An arrest was made Monday in the killing of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer.

Their son, Nick Reiner, was taken into police custody Dec. 15 and “booked for murder,” according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department records viewed by USA TODAY. The acclaimed Hollywood director and actor was killed alongside Singer in their California home Sunday night, Dec. 14, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said in a press conference Monday, according to USA Today.

Police now say Nick Reiner was “responsible for their deaths,” according to a Monday news release.

On the leafy, shaded street where the Reiners lived, in the exclusive Los Angeles Brentwood neighborhood, dozens of journalists gathered at the home’s front gate on Dec. 15. A private security guard stood watch. A solitary bunch of flowers and a candle had been left at the gate as a helicopter and a drone flew overhead. Nearby, workers at a neighboring property watched the growing crowd of reporters with curiosity. A worker approached the Reiners’ gate and began wiping it clean as anchors filmed pieces to camera and waited for fresh news on what happened to Reiner, 78, and Singer, 68.

In an earlier press conference Sunday, Dec. 14, the LAPD said the robbery-homicide division would investigate through the night. Authorities confirmed that they were obtaining a search warrant to conduct a full crime scene investigation, but they did not comment on the injuries sustained by the Reiners.

A representative for Reiner has not yet responded to USA TODAY’s requests for comment.
